The line reached Lorquon in December 1912, where it terminated before the extension to Netherby and Yanac. Below in 1971 - the guard uses the party line phone to tell train control how they are progressing, while the driver does the brakes.

Construction of the extension to Netherby began in May 1915, and it was officially opened in May 1916, in its heyday it boasted a waiting room, goods shed, weighbridge, stock yards, a large crane, and 3 gangers homes. Wheat was stacked in bags until silos were built in 1938 and bulk handling took over. In 1984 all staff were transferred, the houses shifted, all buildings demolished and the platform removed - the line nearly closed, despite a large harvest requiring the construction of an open bunker for 17,000 tonnes of wheat.

The Detpa and Lorquon GEB Silos were constructed and ready for the 19038-39 season. When were the Netherby and Yanac GEB Silos built?
ReplyDeleteThe Jeparit - Yanac passenger (cargoods/mixed) service was withdrawn on 3rd February 1941 (not 1950) When did the last Jeparit - Yanac goods run?
It would have been about mid 1984

The Netherby silo opened in 1938.
ReplyDeleteThe triple column Yanac silo was constructed in April-May 1940. According to 'Time goes by at Yanac' the silo operated for the 1940-41 harvest, "the passenger service was withdrawn in about 1950 and then much later the station became unstaffed". The grain line to Yanac closed in 1984 & the rails were pulled up in 1988.
A detailed article featuring the history of the Jeparit - Yanac branchline will be published in the Spring Edition of the Australian Railway Enthusiast magazine. Copies can be obtained directly from the Railfan Shop, after mid August 2016. Hope someone can confirm the date of the last regular steam-hauled service (Cica late 1967)and the date of the last train to Yanac and/or part trip? (mid to late 1984) Bruce
